Backlink

A link from another website pointing to yours — historically the strongest off-page ranking signal in search.

Definition

In long form.

Backlinks (also called inbound links or external links) signal authority — search engines treat them as votes of confidence. Quality matters more than quantity: a single link from a major news site or trusted industry publication outweighs hundreds from low-trust directories. Modern Google evaluates backlinks via attributes like rel=nofollow (no signal pass), rel=sponsored (paid), rel=ugc (user-generated). Manipulative link-building (PBNs, link exchanges, paid follow links) increasingly triggers penalties via Google's SpamBrain system.

In context

We don't sell link-building. The link-building that actually works is: publish content worth citing, get featured in real publications (the ValiantCEO interview is an example), partner with credible organizations. The shortcuts have negative ROI.
