Originally launched as Search Generative Experience (SGE) in 2023 and rolled out as AI Overviews to general availability in 2024, this feature uses Gemini-family models to synthesize an answer from indexed sources. Cited sources appear as a sidebar; clicks on those sources still flow through. AI Overviews appear most often for informational and how-to queries, less often for transactional and navigational. Their rollout has reduced click-through rates on traditional organic results for many query types.
Optimizing for AI Overview citation looks a lot like optimizing for Featured Snippets — clear question framing, factual content, structured data. The mechanics differ, but the content shape that wins both is similar.
